Gretchen is struggling with her newfound gift as a Whisperer; the constant buzzing in her ears from detecting spells is more frustrating than fun, especially when she is spending time with one of the Order of Iron Nail’s Keepers, the icy but strikingly handsome Tobias Lawless.

But while Gretchen tries to hide the truth and resolve her feelings for him, London fades from beautiful and bustling to deathly silent …Something evil is once again menacing Mayfair, and Gretchen and her cousins must use their powers to prevent a horrible sacrifice.

Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone Victorian house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who are allowed to stay as long as they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women’s rights, and ice cream.

Q & A with Alyxandra Harvey

Tell us a little bit about your main characters
Gretchen is a Whisperer, meaning she can hear spells being cast. All the time. It makes for black headaches and confusion, until she learns to control it. It also gives her the ability to know when a spell is wrong, or when someone is lying to her.

Enter, Tobias Lawless, an icy, proper Keeper with the Order of the Iron Nail and several secrets of his own. He's sent to watch Gretchen since the Order doesn't trust her or her cousins, and she feels it is her duty to evade and annoy him as much as possible.

Describe your ideal writing spot.
Over lattes with Tom Mison.

Or, more realistically: a quiet spot with lots of tea and books and blustery autumn or snow at the window.

How do you keep busy when you're not writing?
I read a lot of books, of course. I also take long walks with my dogs, draw mandalas, and do terribly useful things like embroidering the Tardis. I'm also determined to make my own bread this winter. You know, practical stuff.

If you could have any superhuman ability, what would you choose and why?
Time travel!  With or without the Tenth Doctor. Or Jamie Fraser.

Which do you prefer: hard/paperbacks or ebooks?
I prefer paperbacks because they aren't as heavy as hardcovers and less likely to cause a concussion if I fall asleep reading. That said, traveling with an E-reader has taken pounds off my luggage. Pounds and pounds. And, above all, I like books - anywhere, any format.

What book are you reading now?
I am halfway through Unmade by Sarah Rees Brennan and loving it. She always makes me laugh out loud.
